<idPurp>This dataset represents version 2.7 of the Queensland Biodiversity Planning Assessment. The dataset is an amalgamation of all completed and released Biodiversity Planning Assessments (BPAs). Biodiversity Planning Assessments use existing data to assess ecological concepts such as rarity, diversity, fragmentation, habitat condition, resilience, threats, and ecosystem processes in a uniform and reliable manner across a bioregion. In addition, expert knowledge is used to identify features such as wildlife corridors and areas with special biodiversity value (e.g. centres of endemism or wildlife refugia). The overall biodiversity significance is derived for each spatial unit based upon combinations of these values. This information can be used as an aid in environmental impact assessment, and as an information tool when undertaking land planning and conservation exercises.</idPurp>

<suppInfo>Biodiversity Planning Assessments are developed in two stages: 1) Diagnostic Criteria, and 2) Supplementary Criteria. There are seven Diagnostic Criteria listed below, with each criterion receiving a standard rating of LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH or VERY HIGH. The landscape elements to which the ratings are applied are based on the Regional Ecosystem mapping and are referred to as Remnant Units. Each Criterion can be considered a stand-alone product in its own right and the ‘raw’ data from which the ratings were developed is also included with the data package. Once a rating has been developed for each of the Diagnostic Criteria an overall Biodiversity Significance at State and Regional levels is determined by ‘integrating’ the seven diagnostic criteria using a series of queries. For example, if a Remnant Unit has VERY HIGH ‘Habitat for EVNT Taxa’ or a VERY HIGH ‘Ecosystem Value’ it will be allocated ‘State’ Biodiversity Significance. The stage 2 Supplementary Criteria allows for the refinement of the mapped information from Stage 1 by incorporating local knowledge and expert opinion. The overall Biodiversity Significance for the stage 1 Diagnostic Criteria is adjusted according to the results of input from local knowledge and expert opinion. It is important when using the product to recognise that the results of the stage 1 Diagnostic Criteria is a “first cut” and the allocation of Biodiversity Significance during the stage 2 Supplementary Criteria provides the final assessment of Biodiversity Significance. Diagnostic Criteria: A. Habitat for EVNT Taxa - this criterion brings together information on Endangered, Vulnerable and Near Threatened (EVNT) taxa using buffering of recorded sites to map the potential required habitat. Species distributions are gradually being developed and will progressively replace point records of species. B. Ecosystem Value - this criterion combines a number of elements including the Biodiversity Status of Regional Ecosystems, the presence of poorly conserved Regional Ecosystems, the presence of significant wetlands, and areas of national importance such as World Heritage Areas and Ramsar Sites. Assessed at the State (B1) and Regional (B2) level. C. Tract Size - this criterion is a measure of the relative size of tracts of vegetation in the landscape. D. Relative Size of Regional Ecosystems - this criterion classifies the relative size of each example of a Regional Ecosystem. Patches are compared with all other occurrences of the same Regional Ecosystem at the State (D1) and Regional (D2) level. E. Condition - this criterion represents the quality of remnants judged by the extent to which they resemble their natural condition.
F. Ecosystem Diversity - this criterion reflects the degree to which Regional Ecosystems are ‘packed’ within an area. That is, an area with high Ecosystem Diversity will have relatively many Regional Ecosystems and ecotones. G. Context and Connection - this criterion represents the extent to which a Remnant Unit incorporates, borders or buffers areas such as significant wetlands, endangered ecosystems, and the degree to which a Remnant Unit is connected to other vegetation. Expert Panel Criteria: H. Essential and General Habitat for Priority Taxa - this criterion can be used to identify essential and general habitat for other priority taxa (and in some instances EVNT) additional to that derived under Diagnostic Criterion A. I. Special Biodiversity Values - (Ia) Centres of endemism – areas where concentrations of taxa are endemic to a bioregion or subregion are found. (Ib) Wildlife refugia - for example, islands, mound springs, caves, wetlands, gorges, mountain ranges and topographic isolates, ecological refuges, refuges from exotic animals, and refuges from clearing. (Ic) Areas with concentrations of disjunct populations. (Id) Areas with concentrations of taxa at the limits of their geographic ranges. (Ie) Areas with high species richness. (If) Areas with concentrations of relictual populations (ancient and primitive taxa). (Ig) Areas containing REs with distinct variation in species composition associated with geomorphology and other environmental variables. (Ih) An artificial waterbody or managed/manipulated wetland considered by the panel/s to be of ecological significance. (Ii) Areas with a high density of hollow-bearing trees that provide habitat for animals. (Ij) Breeding or roosting sites used by a significant number of individuals.(Ik) Climate change refugia
J. Corridors – this criterion incorporates terrestrial, riparian and stepping stone landscape corridors identified by expert panels. K. Threatening Process (Condition) - as a consistent assessment of condition for whole bioregions is not yet possible through the diagnostic criteria E, expert panels can consider the condition or habitat quality of regrowth and remnant vegetation. Areas identified by experts under this criterion may be used to amend (upgrade or downgrade) biodiversity significance arising from the 'first-cut' analysis.

<statement>The Queensland Biodiversity Planning Assessment version 2.7 is a compilation of individual completed Biodiversity Planning Assessments. All completed BPAs and have been merged to create the amalgamated state-wide dataset.
Versions:
Version 2.1 (released March 2014) – Incorporated completed biodiversity planning assessments (BPAs) at the time. Bioregions, for which no completed BPA was available at the time of release included the Gulf Plains, Wet Tropics and North West Highlands.
Version 2.2 (released September 2015) - As per version 2.1, however, version 2.2 incorporated the newly completed Gulf Plains Biodiversity Planning Assessment, Version 1.1.
Version 2.3 (released November 2016) - As per version 2.2 above, however, incorporated the results from the updated SEQ Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 4.1.
Version 2.4 (released March 2018) - As per version 2.3 above, however, incorporated the results from the updated BRB Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 2.1.
Version 2.5 (released November 2019) - As per version 2.4 above, however, incorporated results from the newly completed WET Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 1.1.
Version 2.6 (released September 2020) - As per version 2.5 above, however, incorporated results from the newly completed NWH Biodiversity Planning Assessment, version 1.1.
